Swap-out

Also called swap, container swap, dump and return

A swap-out, or swap, is a roll-off service in which the driver picks up a full container, hauls it to disposal, and returns an empty one to the same location. It lets a job site keep working without waiting for a container to be dumped.

How it works

On a long project, a single container can fill up before the work is done. Instead of ending the rental and starting a new one, the customer requests a swap. The driver arrives with an empty container, loads the full one, runs it to a transfer station, landfill, or recycling facility, and brings the empty back.

Depending on the setup, the truck may carry the empty on the way in and swap on site, or return it after dumping. Either way, the customer ends up with an empty box in the same spot.

Why it matters for your business

Swaps are one of the most schedule-sensitive jobs in roll-off. A swap needs the right size container available, a driver with the right truck, access to the site, and a disposal facility open for the dump. A missed gate code or a blocked driveway can turn a swap into a dry run.

Pricing usually has a few parts: the delivery or swap charge, disposal based on weight, and any extra days. Many companies quote a swap as a smaller version of a new rental because the delivery leg is already covered.

For marketing and customer experience:

  • Let customers request a swap online or by text instead of calling the office. Contractors tend to order from the job site.
  • Show swap pricing on the rental page so it is not a surprise.
  • Send a status update when the driver is on the way, which cuts “where’s my truck” calls.

Inside the business, your dispatch software should treat a swap as a linked job on an existing rental, with the same address, container history, and customer notes. That keeps the paperwork straight and helps billing capture the disposal ticket.

Common questions

How is a swap different from a pickup?

A pickup ends the rental. A swap keeps it going with a fresh container.

Do swaps count toward the rental period?

Usually the original rental period continues, but policies differ. State your terms in the rental agreement.

What causes a failed swap?

Blocked access, an overfilled or overweight container, a locked gate, or no empty on hand. Some of these can trigger a dry-run fee.
